Module 4 — City Performance Indicators and Methods of Assessment
Lesson 4 of 13
Emergy and Material Flow Analysis

Two approaches have been established to develop urban metabolism studies. An ecological approach to urban metabolism was developed by Howard Odum, which is a conceptualization of energy flows that he termed Emergy, measured in solar emergy joules. An engineering approach to urban metabolism, developed by Baccini and Brunner, involves the quantification of energy and material flows in standard mass units, using Material Flow Analysis. In this video both methods are presented to describe the methods and demonstrate their application, as they apply to cities and urban sectors.

Emergy and material flow analysis are methods to produce urban metabolism diagrams. They are complementary, but the former is more complicated and as a result has not caught on, while the latter has been more commonly used. Both methods were presented conceptually, with a more detailed description of the five steps of the material flow analysis with examples from existing studies in global cities to demonstrate the five steps visually.
