Module 3 — Principles of Sustainable Urban Design
Lesson 3 of 14
Context for Sustainable Urban Design

The context for sustainable urban design is so rich, so broad in scope, and so diverse. This video presents a few of such visions for city designs and redesigns, historically and into the future, and leaves us with some guiding questions to consider when designing cities.

From Howard’s Garden City in 1898 and Le Corbusier’s vision for a Contemporary City in 1922 to more recent competitions in the early 2000s for sustainable urban systems designs, we develop a good sense of what design principles make cities sustainable. The designs of future cities and the redesign of existing ones are the urban design challenges we face today to create a livable future.
