This week’s readings will provide valuable information about leading middle stages of counseling groups, as well as how to close sessions and end groups effectively.

Readings and Resources

Jacobs E., Schimmel, C., Masson, R., & Harvill, R. (2016). Group counseling strategies and skills (8th ed.). Boston, MA: Cengage Learning. Course Textbook

  • Chapter 12: Leading the middle stage of a group
  • Chapter 15: Closing a session or group

Perspectives from the Field

Leading the middle stages of group work as presented by Jacobs et al., refers to process groups where deeper work often happens. I don’t find this chapter relates to leading the middle stages of psychoeducational groups or MSGs.

I do find the information on closing sessions and ending groups to be very valuable information that I have incorporated into my group counseling practice.
