Introduction
Please read the syllabus. In it, you will find information on goals and expectations, grading and evaluation, important dates, etc.
Textbook. Nederlands in gang. On the first page of the book, you will find a printed code that gives you 24-month access to the online material for the textbook. Follow the instructions above the code and on the website to create an account and activate the website.
An overview of the online study material is provided in the front of the book. The English translation can be found here: Online study material.
Please read the Preface on page 19. It gives some tips on using the book and website and on studying Dutch in general. Not all items will apply to you since you are most probably not living in a Dutch-speaking area.

1.3 Zich voorstellen - introducing yourself
- Lees 1.3 op bladzijde 23 (Read 1.3 on page 23). See what you can understand without the English translation.

- Look at Zich voorstellen/informatie vragen/landen. Were you correct in your guesses of the meaning?
Memorize these sentences and practice your answers to the questions.
- Post your answers to the questions above (in Dutch) to the Discussion "Introduce yourself". To access Discussions, click on the Connect tab and choose Discussions; scroll down the page to find the right one. Then add something (in English) about yourself and why you want to learn Dutch and if you have any connection to the Netherlands, Flanders or Dutch speakers. (due at the end of week 1).
- Once you have posted, you will be able to see posts of other students. Comment on 2 other students' posts.
- I will extend the table on languages and nationalities with your answers on the forum, so each of you will know the name of their country, language, and nationality in Dutch.
1.1 Dialogue
- Look at 1.1 Dialoog (dialogue) on p. 21. You will be able to understand parts of it already. Use 1.2 Woordenlijst (vocabulary list) on p. 22 and 23 to understand the rest.
- Listen to the audio for the dialogue on the website: www.coutinho.nl > nederlands in gang > study material > chapters > chapter 1 > 1.1 Dialoog. There is a version without pauses and one with pauses to repeat.
- You are expected to memorize the vocabulary. In your book, the words are presented in order of appearance in the text. The Woordenlijst Hoofdstuk 1 is alphabetized. You can click the Dutch words to hear the pronunciation. On www.coutinho.nl > nederlands in gang > study material > chapters > chapter 1 > 1.2 Woordenlijst, you find a .pdf and a Word file (which you can change to your liking) and a link to Quizlet, an online tool to help you practice your vocabulary words in different ways.

1.5 Telwoorden
- Read and listen to the Dutch numerals: www.coutinho.nl > nederlands in gang > study material > chapters > chapter 1 > 1.5 Telwoorden.
- Notice how the order of units and tens is the reverse from English. For example, 21 is eenentwintig, literally one and twenty. If you’re familiar with older English, e.g. Shakespearian, you may have come across this way of expressing numbers. Aside from this particularity, counting upwards of twenty is fairly straightforward. One exception being 80 tachtig, where a 't' is added to the beginning (you would expect ‘achtig'). 88 is achtentachtig.
Note on spelling: since the numerals are written without spaces and dashes (at least under 1000), there is a ‘clash’ between the numbers 2 twee/ 3 drie (ending in ‘e’) and ‘en’ (and). To show where to separate the series of e’s, two dots are placed on the e that starts a new syllable (the one for 'en' and):

drieënvijftig (drie-en-vijftig)

1.6 Het alfabet
- Look at 1.6 on page 26. Listen to the audio: www.coutinho.nl > nederlands in gang > study material > chapters > chapter 1 > 1.6 Het alfabet. There is a recording without and with pauses for you to repeat.
Note on the letter y. This letter is in the alfabet and when reciting the alfabet is pronounced close to the English I. This sound is normally spelled ij and referred to as lange ij (long ij, because of the descending j). This as opposed to the other way of spelling this sound ei, which is called korte ei (short ij). The Y however, is only used in words of foreign origin (as psychologie and baby). When spelling, the y is referred to as Griekse y (Greek y) or i-grec (which is the French way of saying it). Confusing? I agree. Just remember when you spell and you need to use Y, refer to it as Griekse y or i-grec.
- Answer the questions of Opdracht 6 on page 26. Voorletter - initial.
1.7 Spellen
- Read the sentences in your book. Do you understand what they mean? Then go to Spellen and check the translation.
- You can also listen to the audio.
1.4 Personaal pronomen + werkwoord
- Look at the tables on page 24. Watch the videos at www.coutinho.nl > nederlands in gang > study material > chapters > chapter 1 > Extra materiaal > Grammar. These videos introduce the personal pronouns, regular conjugation of verbs (present tense) and two irregular verbs, hebben (to have) and zijn (to be). I recommend watching them in this order: Personaal pronomen, Regelmatige werkwoorden, Onregelmatige werkwoorden hebben en zijn. For more information, you can also refer to 1.4 Personaal pronomen and 1.4 Werkwoord.
You will have to memorize these irregular verbs and learn the rules for the regular verbs.
- Then do Opdracht 2 on page 24: fill in the right personal pronoun.
- Do Opdracht 3 on page 25: choose the correct form of the verb.
- Check your answers on page 310.
- Online, there are 4 more exercises under tab 1.4 Personaal pronomen.
1.8 Begroeten en afscheid nemen
- Read the greetings on page 27.
- For audio, go to Begroeten en afscheid nemen. In this table you can also see which greetings are more appropriate for formal and informal situations.
Opdracht 11: Een formulier invullen
Vul je persoonlijke gegevens in: Fill in your personal data.
Toevoeging = suffix to a house number, e.g. a if you number is 22a; or App. 6 for Appartment 6.
Geboortedatum = day of birth; Geboorteland = land of birth
1.9 Uitspraak: zinsaccent
- Listen to the audio online (www.coutinho.nl > nederlands in gang > study material > chapters > chapter 1 > 1.9 Uitspraak: zinsaccent) and read along in your book on page 29. Listen to the question and the answer. Which words are stressed? Underline those. Repeat the answers.
- Look at Opdracht 12 to check your answers.
Cultuur
As explained in the document and the video on the Personaal pronomen (online, tab Extra materiaal, video 2 Personaal pronomen), Dutch makes a distinction between an informal you (jij/je) and a formal you (u).
On page 29 under the heading Cultuur is a short list of people. Would you use u or jij?
FYI, as your docent, I will echo the dialogue: Zeg maar jij, hoor.
But if you are more comfortable using Mevrouw Mohle and u, I will not be offended. Just remember to be consistent. When using first names (Margreet), use jij/je. When using Mrs. (Mevrouw Mohle), use u. Mixing the two is very awkward. Like starting an email with Hi and ending with Sincerely.
Eigen vocabulaire
At the end of each chapter, there is a space to add words that you would like to add around the theme of the chapter. In Hoofdstuk 1, the theme is Welcome. This section is found on page 30. Feel free to post your list of words to add on the Dutch Café discussion board. I will try to provide translations if needed.

"Dit ben ik." Using the phrases and vocabulary learnt in Hoofdstuk 1, write a paragraph in which you introduce yourself.
