Assignment 3
Description
Assignment 3 is worth 40% of your final grade.
This assignment has two due dates: one for the live presentation/demonstration of the prototype, and another for the submission of the design document (source materials). Consult the Course Schedule for the due date for this assignment.
Your team of 2-3 students will design and implement a prototype system based on your grant proposal in Assignment 2.
The prototype system is a combination of illustrations using mock-up screens and an implementation of a limited number of functions and interfaces outlined in the proposal. The focus of this assignment is on the application of knowledge learned during this course, rather than the proficiency of a particular programming skill. The assessment of the project is based on the design of the functions for the intended users and uses, the consideration given to the usability of the system, and the application of the health data and exchange standards. Although some basic programming skills will help in the implementation of the live portion of the project, prior knowledge of a programming language is not a prerequisite of this course, nor of this assignment. The instructor will recommend appropriate software or implementation strategies based on the background and skillsets of each team.
Project and Demo
The team will design and implement a prototype system according to their grant proposal. The prototype system will be demonstrated in two live sessions using Adobe Connect.
a. Design
b. Implementation and demo
c. Presentation and Q&A
Deliverables
1. Design Document (10% of final mark)
Your design document should include the following components with a maximum length of 20 pages:
-
-
Brief description of the challenges/gaps to be addressed by the proposed solution
-
Main use cases and functions
-
Data sources and standards
-
Architectural view of the entire system, with proper highlights on the implemented components and interfaces
-
Evaluation of your solution against the design purpose
2. Live Presentation/Demonstration of Prototype (20% of final mark)
In Week 12, we will host a synchronized live demo session for you to demonstrate your system to the class. The demo consists of a presentation (5 minutes), demo of the system functions (10 minutes), and Q&A (5 minutes).
i. Presentation: a 5-minute presentation about the intended use, functions and key technical innovation of your system. For a project with a focus on the development of an algorithm, your presentation should be longer and explain your experiment and findings in detail.
ii. System Demo: a 10-minute demonstration of how the proposed solution works. You need to show a sample of the real or simulated data you used in the system, mock-up functions and the implemented functions.
iii. Q&A: a 5-minute question and answer segment where you will field questions from the instructor and fellow classmates on your presentation and system demo, and provide appropriate responses.
3. Peer Review and Team Contribution Assessment: (10% of total mark)
3-3-a: Peer Review (4%): Each student is randomly assigned to three projects and is asked to provide feedback to each group on their presentation and demo.
3-3-b: Team Contribution Assessment (2%): Each student will provide both self and peer assessment for the team work.
Access to peer review and assessment grading forms will be available after the Assignment 3 due date in the external tool called PEAR. You can use these forms to review your peers and assess your teammates. Instructions on how to access, submit, review, and assess your peers and teammembers can be found at the bottom of this page.
Grading Scheme
Late Policy
There will be a 2% deduction for each day, up to maximum 5 days (total 10% deduction).
How to Submit Your Assignment
Please note that the following instructions pertain to this specific assignment. Instructions for other assignments may differ.
You need to submit the design document, the presentation slides, and any mock-up/source code, by the date indicated in the Course Schedule, to the following two (2) locations:
-
The Assignment 3 Dropbox in LEARN.
-
The assignment project in PEAR.
Submit to the LEARN Dropbox
Your assignment must be submitted online to the Assignment 3 Dropbox in LEARN by the deadline specified in the Course Schedule. Dropboxes can be accessed from the Course Home page by clicking Submit and then Dropbox on the course navigation bar.
Please submit all files as a single ZIP file. In the case of multiple submissions by the same student, your instructor will mark only the final document uploaded, so make sure your final document is the correct one.
Your assignment must be submitted in one of the following file types:
-
Portable Document Format (PDF)
-
Microsoft Word (DOC or DOCX)
-
Microsoft PowerPoint (PPT or PPTX, PPS or PPSX)
